The defending Mid-State Conference champions had no time to work their way into the season. A young team that saw many of its top scorers graduate last year had to open up the season with a Mid-State Conference showdown with the Decatur Central Hawks. Due to scheduling conflicts, the scheduled season opener with Center Grove was postponed, leaving Coach Dickey’s crew no warm up game to prepare for the Conference Tilt.
Early on the Hawks, playing their second game of the season, took advantage. Despite the slow start the Grizzly Cubs kept the game close in the first half, trailing by 4 at the break. The game remained tight throughout the third but a 12-0 run in the 4th quarter gave the Grizzly Cubs a bit of a cushion and they were able to hold on in the last minute of the game to get the 53-50 Mid-State Victory. The following night, the Grizzly Cubs showed no let down as they went on the road to take on the Seymour Owls. The opening night jitters were gone and the Grizzly Cubs played at the tempo they like. The end result was a 66-42 route of the the Owls. The win takes the Grizzly Cubs record to 2-0 heading into this week’s games, a Mid-State Conference road game at Greenwood and a home contest against Hauser on Friday and Saturday evening.
