Needham Kindergarten welcomed Beekeeper, Rick Waldrip , for a visit. Mr. Rick owns 3Drips Honey Farm in Bargersville, Indiana.

Mr. Rick brought his equipment that he uses to get the honey out of the hives and explained what each item does. He spoke about not using pesticides on our lawns and in our gardens because it can kill the honey bees. Mr. Rick explained why we need the honey bees to pollinate fruits and vegetables so that we have good things to eat. The students were amazed to learn that honey bees are also needed to make ice cream.  They pollinate the vanilla bean plant.  He explained that honey bees are normally gentle creatures that will not hurt us unless they feel threatened. In his observation hive, we got to see live bees doing their jobs . He pointed out the Queen bee, drone bees and worker bees.  It was really cool to watch the bees work. We want everyone to know that the next time you see a bee don't run or scream. Take the time to watch it work and be thankful it is doing its job.
