The Grizzly Cubs started the stretch without the services of Cory Richards for the evening due to illness and the Franklin offense seemed to struggle to find a way to fill his offensive roll. The Golden Bears on the other hand, came out on fire to start the game and the Grizzly Cubs found themselves in a hole halfway through the first quarter. Finally the Grizzly Cubs got some stops to pull within 1 at the end of the first quarter. The Grizzly Cubs struggled to maintain consistency in the second and the Golden Bears surged to a six point halftime edge. A strong third quarter gave the Grizzly Cubs a 1 point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but the Grizzly Cubs couldn’t hold off the hosts in the fourth. The Golden Bears hit several key free throws down the stretch to claim a 50-47 win.
On December 28, the Grizzly Cubs played in the Rushville Lion Classic. The Cubs opened up by playing the #12 team in 2A, Shenandoah. The Raiders entered the contest 7-2 with their 2 losses coming by a combined three points. After trailing deep into the second quarter, the Grizzly Cubs surged to a 28-25 halftime lead. In the second half the Grizzly Cubs fended off a Raider run to pull away in the fourth to secure the 59-48 win. Drew Byerly led the Cubs offense with 17 points.
In the evening session the Grizzly Cubs played Mid-State Conference opponent Mooresville in a non-conference setting. The Pioneers held the Cubs to under 20% from 3 point range (29 attempts) while they hit 64% of their shots from the field. The result of the shooting difference and a 12-0 fourth quarter run by the Pioneers was a 50-61 loss for the Grizzly Cubs. Cory Richards led the Cubs in scoring with 15 points.
In the JV tournament, the Grizzly Cubs won both games to take the title.
The Grizzly Cubs did not have to wait long to see the Pioneers again. On Saturday January 7, the Grizzly Cubs travelled to Mooresville for the Mid-State Conference game. The Grizzly Cubs got off to an icy start trailing 3-13 after the first quarter. In the second, the Grizzly Cubs turned the tables in the second quarter, outscoring the Pioneers by 10 to knot the score at 19 heading to the halftime break.
In the fourth quarter Franklin had possession with the score tied at 47. Jacob Rockey drove through the lane and kicked it to the corner for an open three that was off the mark. However, Hunter Gross was unblocked on the weakside and tipped the missed shot in just before the buzzer to secure a 49-47 win! The victory moved the Grizzly Cubs to 3-0 heading in the Mid-State Conference.
